TESTIMONIALS

Dear Administrator,

As the trustee of the estate of Mr. & Mrs. S. I am here by authorized to release the sum of $10,000.00 to Christine.

It has been requested that these funds be administered by her to the betterment of the residents’ social well being.

For the past several years Christine has been very competent in administering and allocating funds which we have donated for entertainment, celebrations, group supplies, etc.

It is because of her understanding of the needs of the residents, especially those cognitively and dementia impaired that we have requested that she continue to administer the allocations of these funds.

The care given to D & A far exceeded anything we could have managed as members of their family. We can never express, in total, our sincere appreciation for all she has done for us.

With the proper allocation of these funds, enjoyment of life for the residents will perhaps be a little brighter in their remaining years.

Yours truly,

Karen D.

Dear Christine,

We received the wonderful pictures you sent us. My mother was delighted to see them. It made her day.

It was very touching, that  you went to all that trouble to make her stay more comfortable.

May God Bless your wonderful work, for it is something that you seem perfectly suited for. I wish we had more people like you!

Love,

M.G. & C

Our number one problem - TIME

Creating meaningful programs for the cognitive/dementia impaired has and continues to be a challenge. Over the years I find that the time needed to create these special programs is just not there.

  • Quality time needed to sit down with the staff and brainstorm is lacking.

  • Sitting in front of the computer doing research is virtually non-existent.

  • Budgeted monies required to implement programs are low.

  • Finding programs to meet individual needs.

  • Keeping clients and staff motivated.

I remember the good old days when funding and program ideas flowed freely.

QUIET ON THE SET

Who needs a lot of noise?

Noise can be very disturbing to the cognitively alert. So one can only imagine how the cognitively impaired must find it.

Very often noise can result in more noise.

Imagine this... you place a cognitively impaired client into a area of loud noises. This client hears the noise all around them. They are not exactly sure of what is happening so what do they do? They get in on the action and they start to make more noise. Now we have more noise.

Now there can be both medical and environmental reasons why people make the noises that they do and very often we may overlook the obvious reasons.

Possible medical or physiological causes:

· The client may be hungry

· They may need to go to the bathroom

· They may be in pain

· They maybe hearing impaired and over compensating when they speak

· They may need to be repositioned

· and the list can go on and on ........................................

Possible environmental causes:

· There may already be too much noise

· They may be upset by another’s behaviour

· They may feel over stimulated

· The room may be to cold or to hot

· They may just need some attention

· and the list can go on and on ........................................

Whatever the causes maybe we do need to do something about it.

For many years I have argued the need for silence. I have always felt that we rely too much on noise to fill our time. I could never understand why it is necessary to have programs where noise is involved.

Why can’t we do a few programs in silence or at least minimize the noise level. Why do things have to be so loud?

In this e-book I have tried to capture a few program guides that reserve the need for silence or minimum noise.

Have fun with them. Enjoy the quiet. Let your other senses do the work for you and you and your clients will be amazed at the things you discover.

Thank you and have fun.

Christine Roberts

PS. Always thank the participants for their time and participation in the program
