Therapeutic One to One and Bedside Program Guides that will ensure everyone’s participating. Individualized planning and acute knowledge in the care of the isolated and withdrawn client brings programming to a new level.

Let us remember those who often fall through the cracks of our programs.

Quite often those who do not take part in group programs or activities are often lacking in activity participation. Unfortunately there is always a few that fall into this category in every facility.

It is not because we deliberately set out to do this but at times it is because we do not know what to do with these clients because these clients present themselves as disinterested in anything we present to them. They tell us they prefer to be left alone to pursue their own activities.

Trying to include these people has been a problem that has faced ‘Activity/Recreation Therapist for as long as I can remember and continues even to this day. That is why I have put together a ‘Therapeutic Program Guides for Those Who Choose Not to Participate’.

Knowing each client will be different I developed each idea behind each activity to be so simplistic that it may be implemented differently depending on the client's ability, likes, dislikes and interest.

By doing this the same program can be presented to many clients of many cognitive functioning abilities but always on a different creativity level. This not only ensures the enjoyment of the program by the participant but also the leader.

Let me explain what ‘Bedside Therapy’ is as I understand it and how it differs from ‘One to One Visits’.

‘Bedside Therapy’ is defined as a therapeutic tool that is derived from group programs. It is designed to meet the needs on a one to one basis for clients who cannot participate in group programs. Reasons for non-group participation may be bedridden, quarantine, because they have chosen to isolate themselves, withdrawn, or those who do not benefit from a group activity.

On the other hand ‘One to One Visits’ are offered as a time to greet, orientate, invite, inquire, familiarize, assist, provide reassurances, boost self esteem and maintain individualism.

These guides focus on the five essential elements in the proper maintenance of your clients' activity needs. The emotional, physical, spiritual, intellectual and social aspects of all life.

You will find each guide filled with information you just simply can not do effective programming without.

TESTIMONIALS

Hello Christine,

How are you? I was reviewing your website and was wondering, do you work in a nursing home yourself, presently? If so, do you work with other people? I find your story so fascinating, it seems as though you are an inspiration to other Activity Coordinators out there? How was your journey throughout this whole process?

I am a Recreational Therapist, who lives in Alberta. and I just came across your site.

Did you create your website yourself? I was thinking of starting my own business, but nothing in this field and I liked your layout of the site, unfortunately, I am not that smart when it comes to computers.

It was really heart-warming, reading your experiences and the letter you received I felt as though I was sharing them along with you, I guess that is what this field does to you.

Take Care for Now

Hoping to hear from you soon
Nadia

Dear Christine,

We received the wonderful pictures you sent us. My mother was delighted to see them. It made her day.

It was very touching, that  you went to all that trouble to make her stay more comfortable.

May God Bless your wonderful work, for it is something that you seem perfectly suited for. I wish we had more people like you!

Love,

M.G. & C

Our number one problem - TIME

Creating meaningful programs for the cognitive/dementia impaired has and continues to be a challenge. Over the years I find that the time needed to create these special programs is just not there.

  • Quality time needed to sit down with the staff and brainstorm is lacking.

  • Sitting in front of the computer doing research is virtually non-existent.

  • Budgeted monies required to implement programs are low.

  • Finding programs to meet individual needs.

  • Keeping clients and staff motivated.

I remember the good old days when funding and program ideas flowed freely.

With the ever increasing amount of paperwork required by the different government departments and the care institutions, these problems are becoming increasingly more evident.

  • On a weekly basis

  • During times when a large group activity are happening elsewhere

  • Away from as much distraction as possible

  • With those who cannot or have chosen not to attend the large group activity

The goals of a bedside therapy session maybe:

  • To form a trusting and caring relationship with the client

  • To provide an emotional, social, intellectual, physical and spiritual stimulation

  • To provide a sense of accomplishment and self worth

  • To provide a means of reminiscence

  • To provide an opportunity for self expression

  • To orientate client to time, place and person

Like all programs bedside and one to one activities should be evaluated immediately after the program ends. This ensures more vivid recount of the program.

A few things to consider when evaluating the program.

  • The extent of the interaction and interest of the client
  • The responsiveness to the materials and equipment
  • The client's verbal and non-verbal communication
  • Was there a degree of bonding developed between the client and the coordinator of the program
  • Did the client enjoy the program?

As with all activities it is important that the leader be well prepared for all bedside activities or 1 to 1 activities.

So, be sure you know what is needed and required before taking on the task.

There are many things one can do to insure that the Bedside Activity or 1 to 1 Activity is successful.

Listed below are a few suggestions that will ensure a satisfying, enjoyable and encouraging activity for both the client and the leader.

  • Know your client's likes and dislikes
  • Know the needs and wishes of the client
  • Greet the client with a smile and enthusiasm
  • Show enthusiasim and excitment towards the upcoming activity
  • The activity must be client centered
  • Come prepared with a variety of activity ideas. The more cognitively impaired the client the greater the simplicity of the activity
  • When preparing for a craft always know what is required for the craft. Fimiliarize yourself with the craft project before attempting with the client. If possible have a completed sample
  • Take all the supplies with you at one time. Don't lose the momentium of the activity by having to go retrieve a forgotten item
  • It is always a good idea to bring a covered basket or some sort of container to hold your supplies and to porter them
  • If the area you choose to hold your activity is not equipped with a table bring a portable table If client is confined to their bed a firm piece of poster board is great or a light weight board is very effective
  • Always be supportive of the client's decisions or comments
  • Always offer verbal compliments and encouragements throughout the program
  • Enjoy yourself
  • And always thank the participant for their time and participation in the program

Bring an Evaluation Form to evaluate the program immediately after the completion of the program. This way the client can offer you their comments while they are still fresh to them. Encourage them to be truthful as this evaluation will be used as an improvement tool.
